Signs of aging can appear over time, following a pregnancy or as a result of chronic sun damage. Facial rejuvenation using botulinum toxin and/or hyaluronic acid injections leaves you looking fabulous in the blink of an eye.

“Patients turn to botulinum toxin to appear younger without having to resort to surgery. Hyaluronic acid (Juvederm) injections are often combined with botulinum toxin injections in order to maximize the rejuvenating effect of the procedure.”

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a substance produced by a bacteria, which has a paralyzing effect on muscles. The botulinum toxin is injected in the facial muscles to reduce their contractions and thereby soften wrinkles. When combined with hyaluronic acid injections, botulinum toxin can effectively and subtly give you a younger appearance without resorting surgery. Patients often leave the clinic with a natural glow, looking well-rested. The effects of the procedure often last for months.

What is hyaluronic acid (Juvederm)?

With age, soft tissue tends to soften and lose volume, resulting in a sagging or drooping effect. This causes wrinkles, i.e., folds caused by creasing of the skin, to appear. Hyaluronic acid is a natural product which helps restore volume in the skin, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles and giving the face an overall more youthful look. Furthermore, hyaluronic acid injections can be given to add a small amount of volume in areas such as the nose, lips and forehead, so as to change their shape in a discrete yet significant manner. Juvederm injections are often combined with botulinum toxin injections. Together, they immediately create a subtle yet remarkable rejuvenation effect without surgery. Patients often leave the clinic with a natural glow, looking well-rested.

Frequently asked questions

Botulinum toxin

In general, botulinum toxin injections administered by a fully trained healthcare professional are very safe. The most common complication is bruising at the injection site due to a small blood vessel bursting. Such bruises do not require any treatment and will gradually disappear within one to two weeks.

Botulinum toxin injections can reduce the mobility of facial muscles more than expected. In such exceptional cases, the eyelid on the side of the face affected by the treatment may droop if the muscle which controls it has been paralyzed. If this happens to you, do not worry. These effects should wear off within three months or so. Naturally, your surgeon attempts to preserve the symmetry of your face with the injections. However, you may present a slight asymmetry following the injections. This can be corrected with an additional injection over the following days or the effects will gradually diminish over time (approximately three months).

Juvederm

In general, hyaluronic acid injections administered by a fully trained healthcare professional are very safe. There may be redness, swelling and increased sensitivity in the areas treated with the filler in the week following the injection. Such reactions are both normal and temporary.

The most common complication is bruising at the injection site due to a small blood vessel bursting. They do not require any treatment and will gradually disappear within one to two weeks. You may also notice slight irregularities near the injection sites; these will disappear in the weeks following the injections.

The effects of botulinum toxin last approximately three to four months, after which the paralyzed muscles begin to contract as they did before the injections. Touch-ups may be necessary after a few months or years. In general, the desired effects last longer with regular injections.

Depending on the number of sites to be injected, the procedure can last 15 to 30 minutes.

There are no specific restrictions regarding physical activity.

In general, the cost is based on the number of units of botulinum toxin used and whether the botulinum toxin is combined with hyaluronic acid injections. Therefore, the cost of a session can vary but begins at $150. Additional charges may apply if the patient has a particular condition or if different surgeries are combined.
