Buffalo hump describes a mass of fat that accumulates at the back of the base of the neck, in the cervical region. It develops progressively, and becomes prominent particularly in cases of muscular weakness, poor posture, when the head moves forward and the shoulders droop. To prevent buffalo hump, you need to watch your posture, keep your head in line with your spine, and watch your weight. Women going through menopause are also vulnerable due to hormonal changes. Targeted exercises and yoga, for example, which focus on postural awareness, can help counter the development of buffalo hump.
How is buffalo hump surgery performed?
There is also a surgical procedure available to improve the appearance of buffalo hump. Consisting essentially of an accumulation of fat, buffalo hump can be treated by liposuction. A small incision is made at the base of the neck, where a cannula is inserted to suck out the fatty deposits. The surgery lasts around 45 minutes and is generally performed under sedation. Convalescence is short, generally lasting less than a week.
